Baking Made Easy

Ever since I got SATALITE TV, I’ve been checking out Baking Made Easy on the BBC Channel. Lorraine Pascale is refreshing and entertaining. She comes across as a presenter and isn’t an over the top personality like most bakers on TV shows. Pascale is a former model who concentrates on making simple, quick, yet professional quality baked goods.

In the first episode I saw, she concentrated on going over the essentials items needed for baking her recipes. She picked out many common items that didn’t require special ordering or a trip to a specialty grocery store. She then went on to make signature baking pieces like soda bread, shortcrust and a blueberry and lemon millefeuille that serve as the base for many baked goods. I thought the concept of breaking each episode into perfecting similar pieces was novel.

Impressed with the last episode, I decided to check out the next episode and was again delighted by the presentation. Pascale goes through common baked goods like brownies, flapjacks, rolls, canapes and tarts and teaches viewers how to make them quicker with less mess and better flavor. She also goes through things like her whipping technique. She’s definitely not your typical chef. I’m not sure whether she’s a qualified pastry chef, but she definitely understands that her viewers aren’t trained chefs and so she doesn’t gloss over the mundane like most chefs are prone to do. Easily the first cooking show where I’m actually interested in catching the first showing of an episode and not just catching repeats.
