According to Chrysler commercials featuring Snoop Dogg, “If the ride is more fly, then you must buy”. However, if you ask bassist Michael Henderson, buying is one thing Snoop Dogg did not do. Henderson is considered a godfather of fusion jazz and has had much influence on the industry for the past forty years. He toured with Stevie Wonder, recorded extensively with Miles Davis, and went on to release eight critically acclaimed solo albums. Henderson filed a lawsuit against Snoop Dogg on July 6th in Michigan, in which he states Snoop illegally sampled “Riding” on the 2008 track “Flashbacks”, which was released on a mixtape. Henderson attests that Snoop illegally used a segment of “Hands on the Wheel” to boost ticket and internet sales for his 2008 West Fest tour.
Also named in the suit are Golie Loc, Kam, MC Eiht, and Snoop’s bosses at Universal Records.
Henderson is suing for copyright infringement, unfair competition and unjust enrichment. He is seeking unspecified damages in a trial by jury.
Snoop has yet to comment on the case.
