Millions of electronic card payment machines and ATMs in Indonesia have been offline over the last week, and it may take 2 additional weeks prior to the whole service is reinstated. This occurred post an outage from a satellite that belongs to PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom), the state-controlled telecom major.
Almost 15,000 ground sites all over Indonesia were impacted by the issue on the “Telkom-1” satellite, whose facility is utilized by government organizations, broadcasters, banks, and other companies. Alex Sinaga, the President director of Telkom, gave this information to the media this week. A change in the direction of the antenna of the satellite, which was initially recognized last week, had disturbed connectivity.
The largest bank in Indonesia by market value, BCA (Bank Central Asia), had almost 5,700 of its ATMs impacted by the outage, or 30% of all ATMs managed by the bank. This data was given by Jahja Setiaatmadja, Chief Executive of BCA, to the media in an interview. The connectivity of Internet in most of the remote BCA branches were also impacted, he further claimed. Bank Rakyat Indonesia, the State-controlled bank, claimed that almost 300 of its ATMs were impacted, but some had been re-established since then.
Most of the shoppers in Jakarta claimed that stores cannot process credit card transactions utilizing Electronic Data Capture (EDC) machines over the last week, while Twitter consumers criticized about a lot of ATMs not been online still this week. As per the data from central bank, there are over 100,000 ATM machines in the country. Our guess is by September 10, all 15,000 ATMs might be back online,” Sinaga claimed. Up to last week, almost 17% of the connections had been gained back, he further added, by adjusting the direction of ground antennae and moving connections to other satellites.
Telkom is moving its connection to other satellites possessed by foreign firms, which wrap Indonesia and 2 other satellites possessed by the firm. The company is moving to these satellites from Telkom-1. Telkom-1 that was rolled out in 1999 has a design validity of 15 Years but it might function normally till 2019.
