Formula One will coronet its first champion of the virtual world at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix during the season-ending. The company made this move last week after declaring the roll out of an eSports series to start from September and end in November.
The new eSports Series is a joint venture with Formula One, Codemasters, the game developer, and Gfinity, the competitions and events specialists. The series will be in 3 levels, commencing with qualification level in September to decide the 40 fastest virtual drivers, and will operate on Xbox One, PlayStation4, and Windows PC platforms. Live semi-finals will be conducted at Gfinity Arena in London in October with the leading 20 making an entry in the 3-race finals at Yas Marina circuit of Abu Dhabi in November.
The first world champion of eSports Series will by default be qualified for the semi-finals of the next year. Sean Bratches, Managing Director of Formula One, claimed to the media in a statement that the new series deliberately stand for an astonishing chance for our commerce and represents the way we keep our fans busy.” Liberty Media, the US-based company who in January took over Formula One, have aimed gaming as a development area to boost incomes and link with teenage audiences.
Some of participants of Formula One are by now accepting the world of eSports, with Zak Brown, the Executive Director of McLaren, claiming that all teams might ultimately have their personal virtual equivalent. McLaren, going via critical times but still the 2nd most successful group when it comes to race wins, rolled out “World’s Fastest Gamer” initiative in May to employ, from virtual racing, a simulator driver. Various race drivers, comprising Dutch teenager Max Verstappen of Red Bull, are also lively gamers.
The Formula E all-electric series has already conducted a virtual race among all of its gamers and drivers. Last January in Las Vegas, the winner was Dutch virtual racer Bono Huis, who got a jackpot of $200,000. In July in New York, Formula E live-streamed over smartphones a virtual race among race drivers and gamers for fans to watch all over the world.
