Snapchat is introducing a new feature based on its recent procurement of Zenly, which is a social mapping startup. According to sources, the deal was finalized somewhere between $250 and $350 Million. However, Snap Inc. would allow Zenly to operate independently in the same way Facebook permits Instagram function autonomously.
The feature, dubbed “Snap Map,” that enables the users to share their present location, which can be seen by friends on the platform and updates whenever the user opens Snapchat. The new feature will be available to all Android and iOS users across the globe.Once the user gets the access to this new feature, they can opt to share their location with only a few friends, all friends, or even vanish from the map whenever they want by enabling the “Ghost mode” or not accessing the app for few hours.
Otherwise, by default, the location sharing is switched off and you can keep it that way to merely hide, seeing what friends are up to.To use the Snap Map, the user must pinch on their Snapchat camera home screen. You can then scroll from there to know where your friends are across the globe or in your city. On toggling their “ActionMoji” BitMoji avatar, you can see their Story to know what they are up to or even permits to directly message them to make meet plans. ActionMojis will be set for you by Snapchat automatically based on time of day, your location, and other factors.
Beyond the location-sharing component, Snap Map also offers the users an alternate method to see Story content further than the Stories feed and the potent but covered up Story Search feature. The “Our Story” enables you to submit your Snapchat Story posts to be seen by the non-friends for about 24 hours. “Heat” colors can be seen by the users on the Snap Map to know where a bundle of Snaps is being posted. This may suggest a big event or concert from which you may like to discover Snap Stories.
As your location is only updated when you open the app, it is surely more inclined toward saving battery life and privacy. What do you think about it?
