The automotive world is evolving around the autonomous and electric technology. The reliability factor of the autonomous cars though is a big question mark for the designers and manufacturers. On the other side, the developers that are majorly focused on the electric vehicles have accomplished various milestones and are way ahead of the self-driving vehicle makers.
Glimpsing into the most lucrative Indian market, where Tesla is in plans to make its entry in the country with its super efficient electric vehicle and Mahindra boosting its effort to make its presence crucial in the market, Tata Motors surpass these two by initiating a pilot test of an electric bus.
The auto giant, Tata Motors has jointly started testing electric buses through its Smart City plan with Chandigarh Transport Department and Chandigarh Transport Undertaking. Tata’s electric bus named as Ultra Electric holds a seating capacity of 31 and it is 9 meters long by length.
The joint operation will witness the Ultra Electric bus functioning on the roads of Chandigarh for the duration of more than 15 days. The test is the continuation of another test that was conducted from Parwanoo to Shimla. While testing on this route, the bus covered 160 Km with a full charged battery. The assessment is a part of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ aim to make the public transportation electrified. Tata Motors is one of the crucial player in the electric mission with a range of vehicles starting from 9–12 Meters with varying seating capacity
The auto-giant had revealed its Ultra Electric bus at Auto Expo 2016. The bus is totally built on Tata Ultra platform that is fully electric and transmits zero emissions. The bus will be equipped with CCTV and Intelligence Transport System for information deliverance to the public via GPS-enabled destination display boards.
Tata Motors had affirmed about its testing plans of an electric bus, earlier this month in a conversation between Executive Chairman of Mahindra Group Anand Mahindra and Tesla CEO, Elon Musk.
Tata Motors is also dominating in Hybrid transportation segment in India. It is all set to deliver the first lot of low floor, ultra modern hybrid buses to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
