The recent trend among the adults and youngsters to stay slim and trim is the major factor responsible for the concept of diet to flourish. One of the widely followed diets today is the “yo-yo dieting.” No matter how effective the dieting turns out to be, but it comes along with a number of side effects. This diet is a strict no for the people suffering from heart diseases. People lack the knowledge regarding the diet topic, hence are clueless about the severity related to the constant losing and gaining of weight.
Yo-yo dieting is commonly known as the weight cycling or the yo-yo effect which means the repeated loss and gain of weight. This fluctuation in the weight over the years is matter of great concern for the people with coronary heart disease as may be more prone to heart attacks, stroke or even death.
According to the researchers Dr. Sripal Bangalore and her colleagues from the Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center at NYU Langone Medical Center, New York found out that the health risks related to the yo-yo dieting is huge as the people tend to lose lives. In order to prove their study right, they carried out number of trials including people with coronary heart diseases. The number of deaths related to the disease is about 370,000 in the U.S. In the case of CHD, the coronary artery responsible for the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart is blocked due to the buildup of plaque (cholesterol). The cholesterol levels in the body especially the arteries can lead to death.
However, if an obese or overweight individual is compared to the person following the dieting procedure then the heart-related death rates of the obese is more. This put the researcher’s theory at risk as they were unable to prove the connection between the yo-yo dieting and increased heart risks such as stroke, heart attacks, or even death. However, the researchers are still continuing their research in order to prove their concept correct.
In short, diet less and stay fit to lead a healthy life.
