iPhone 5s saw the first time Apple used fingerprint sensors in its smartphone few years ago. Since then, a number of smartphone manufacturers have introduced fingerprint sensor’s technology to their device. Now, it’s time for LG! LG is pioneering its new fingerprint sensor to its smartphone. This sensor will sit under the display. It means that when you will put your finger over the glass of display, the fingerprint sensor under the glass will identify your fingerprint automatically.
LG Innotek CEO Jongseok Park announced on Monday that the fingerprint sensor under the glass will not only eradicate the need of dedicated buttons, pads, or few other elements, but will also make the smartphones more water resistant as the number of openings will be reduced. It will also lead to slimmer devices in coming future.
“0.01 inch (0.3mm) slot on the back of display glass has been cut down and fingerprint sensor has been installed with supreme precision & combination technology” says LG Innotek.
The fingerprint sensor has 0.002 percent false acceptance rate. LG further adds that the fingerprint sensor is 0.0098inch (0.25mm) thick and can resist the impact of a 130-gram steel ball dropped from a height of 7.9inches.
The Head of Research & Development Centre LG, Changhwan Kim added – “We are concentrating on our resources for the development of a differentiated technology. We will continue to provide the best user experience by launching the innovative product.”
LG has yet not made it clear that when we would start seeing this innovative technology in its smartphones or other devices. But, according to a source, a company’s spokesperson had talked with Korea Times and he had stated that the technology is in talk with brands and the product will be commercialized within a year. So, we hope to see this technology soon in near future.
