London: Shreya Ukil, who is a 40-year old Indian woman and also a senior techie at Wipro’s London back office, has declared to have won a lawsuit in British tribunal against the IT giant Wipro. She lodged the case against the company for sacking her on basis of gender discrimination, unequal pay & victimization. Wipro confirmed, “The tribunal upheld the dismissal as true and rejected claims of undesirable attitude towards women.”
In a joint statement, Ukil’s lawyers Gordon & Slater said, “Wipro’s leadership team including T.K. Kurein, who was Chief executive of the team then, conspired to throw Ukil out of her job”.
Ukil won her claim for the equal pay because she did exactly the same work as her male peers did. Ukil reiterated, “The court ruled out my favor on victimization, unfair dismissal, and sex discrimination. The tribunal found her the victim of racism and sexism.
Ukil has worked for 10 years for Wipro and had won multi-million dollar contracts for the company over her tenure. Ukil even sued a Bangalore-based outsourcing firm in year 2015 seeking compensation. The company said that Manoj Punja and Ukil were found in relationship and did not tell this to the company. So the company relieved them as it was against company’s policy. Ukil said that Manoj Punja, the Head of BPO Office in London forced her into an affair.
After losing all the faith, finally she raised her grievances with Azim Premjii, Wipro Chairman. He assured her of impartial and fair investigation on the matter. She sent an email to Premji, when she resigned in September 2014. Her resignation was not accepted and 4 days later, she was fired from the job.
The tribunal also found comments made on Ukil by Wipro employees Goerge Joseph and Sid Sharma on different occasions. The comments looked like they were asking for sexual favors from Ukil. Ukil said, “I hope that the companies will look through a thorough treatment of their female employees after this win by me.”
